Who owns antiquity?

A. SRIVATHSAN
The world of antiquities is a murky and complex one where ownership is a contested space. Many Indian sculptures (and pieces of architecture) of immense historical value are still languishing in Western museums. In this context, it was naïve to expect Gandhi’s memorabilia to be returned voluntarily.
What do we make of it when a pair of old glasses, sandals and a small bowl is worth Rs.10...

Culture Ministry's employees on Thursday cancelled their 24-hour strike and opened the archaelogical site of the Acropolis for visitors, in an act of good will after reassurances by Culture Minister Antonis Samaras for resolving the problem of paying contract staff working at the culture ministry through a bill to be tabled in Parliament within days.

The New Acropolis Museum: A dialogue with antiquity

By Nicolai Ouroussoff,
ATHENS: No sane architect, one can assume, would want to invite comparisons between his building and the Parthenon. So it comes as little surprise that the New Acropolis Museum, which stands at the foot of one of the great achievements of human history, is a quiet work, especially by the standards of its flamboyant Swiss-born architect, Bernard Tschumi.
But in mastering his ego, Tschumi pulled off an impressive accomplishment: a building that is both an...

March 6, 2009.
Fifteen years have been passed without Melina Mercouri. Melina died in 1994 at the Memorial Hospital of New York, at the age of 73, from lung cancer. When her body returned to her beloved country, she was buried at the First Cemetery of Athens, with honours equivalent to that of a Head of State. Thousands of Greeks attended the funeral, while a whole nation was mourning a great personality of cultural and political significance.

ATHENS, GREECE (AP): Tourists who came to Athens on Thursday to see the Acropolis — one of Europe's most famous cultural sites — found themselves met at the gate by striking guards explaining why they had shut the place down.
The antiquities sites guards, who are temporary contract workers, are demanding permanent positions and the payment of wages they say are past due. Thursday was the first day of a strike the guards say will last three days, meaning Athens' signature tourist site will...

The date has been announced. On June 20th, the New Acropolis Museum of Athens will be inaugurated, opening its gates to the public. Crouching at the foot of the Acropolis rock, the brand new Museum is consisting the forefront of Greece's continual effort for the restoration of the Parthenon Marbles. The opening of the 130 million Euro ultra-modern building, which covers almost 14,000 square meters of exchibition space, dismantles the years-long argument that there isn't a...

by Charles Bremner in Paris and Jane Macartney in Beijing.
China is trying to block the sale in Paris of two 18th-century bronze animal heads from the collection of Yves Saint Laurent, the late French couturier, because they were looted from Beijing by a marauding Franco-British army. A team of Beijing lawyers is to lodge a suit with French courts to prevent...

by Alastair Bruce.
Two MPs championing the return of the Elgin Marbles to Greece this year, to mark the opening of a new museum at the ancient Acropolis in Athens, have sent letters out this week to all their fellow legislators recruiting Parliamentary support.
My interest in this is because the marbles were brought back to Britain from Athens by my Great Great Great Grandfather, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, at the start of the 19th century. He was passionate about antiquities and wanted...

by Charlotte Higgins.

Last night the president, Dimitrios Pandermalis, and the architect, Bernard Tschumi, of the New Acropolis Museum in Athens were in London to present their plans for the building, which opens sometime in early spring. They gave a clear sense of this impressive-looking museum, which is built in the shadow of the Parthenon atop...
